From Scotland to Shanghai: Novosound’s Harry Cowan joins Squad UK for WorldSkills 2026

Harry Cowan a talented Production Technician, from Kirkmuirhill, Scotland, working at novosound will be setting out on a journey of a lifetime, in an intrepid bid to do the UK proud on the international stage at the ‘Skills Olympics’ in Shanghai, China 2026.

At novosound, we’re incredibly proud to see Harry’s talent recognised on a national and now international stage. From his early days with the company, Harry has demonstrated technical skill, curiosity, and a real passion for precision, all qualities that reflect the innovation-driven culture we strive to nurture. His selection for Squad UK is not only a personal achievement, but a testament to the calibre of talent coming through Scotland’s advanced manufacturing sector.

We firmly believe that investing in our people is as important as investing in our technology. Whether it’s supporting staff through engineering challenges or global competitions like WorldSkills, we’re committed to creating opportunities for growth and excellence. Harry’s journey is a proud moment for everyone at novosound, and we look forward to supporting him as he prepares to represent the UK on the world stage.

Following Harry Cowan’s success in the national skills competitions, WorldSkills UK, in partnership with Pearson, has announced that Harry Cowan will join its 18-month intensive training programme.

The WorldSkills competition is considered by global experts as the ultimate test of a nation’s ability to meet future skills needs.  It is attended by government representatives, educationalists, and leading employers from across the globe.

WorldSkills UK uses its participation in the international WorldSkills competition to promote skills excellence and working with education, industry, and UK governments it is embedding world class training standards across the UK.  This is helping to meet the demand for a highly skilled workforce in crucial sectors including engineering, digital, manufacturing and construction.

This competition has been an incredible opportunity to challenge myself and grow. It’s pushed me to refine my technical skills, think more creatively, and adapt to new challenges. The experience has been invaluable, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next!

Congratulations to Harry on being selected for the WorldSkills competition in Additive Manufacturing! Since joining novosound in July 2024, he’s had a positive impact on the team, bringing enthusiasm, technical skill, and a drive for continuous improvement. As a production technician, he plays a key role in running and maintaining our 3D printers, laser cutters, and other equipment essential to our additive manufacturing processes. His selection for WorldSkills is a well-earned recognition of his hard work, and we’re excited to see him continue to develop his skills. Best of luck, Harry—we’re all rooting for you!

This is a fantastic achievement and a true testament to Harry’s exceptional abilities. It is the first time China has hosted the prestigious WorldSkills event, which is known as the ‘Skills Olympics’.  The event will see 1,500 young people travel to Shanghai from over 80 countries to compete in technical skill disciplines from engineering, manufacturing and technology through to creative, digital and hospitality in front of an audience of 250,000.  The UK will be competing in over 30 skills at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, including 3D Digital Game Art, Robot Systems Integration and Renewable Energy.

Pearson is the official partner of Team UK for WorldSkills Shanghai, which takes place from 22-27 September 2026.

At novosound we’ll be following Harry’s journey over the next 18 months and cheering him all the way to Shanghai!
